Why I’m making lemonade with real lemons during Covid 19
With all that is happening in our home, community and world I’m trying to take the mindset of day by day. I’ve tried to create a routine at home to keep my daughter somewhat structured. It is not only good for her health but my mental health as well. When we are handed lemons I’m making lemonade out of it.
Is it really lemons though? We are all in different situations right now and each day is a rollercoaster of emotions. Some working from home, some not working and our essential frontline workers facing this head on. Thank you to all the hospital staff, grocery staff and everyone else who is doing their part. I’ve really been trying to take this time to be grateful for what I have, where I am and appreciate the little things. It is also allowed for a time for me to reflect on life and business.
Somewhere along the way I got so caught up in running a business that I started to let my own health slide. I’m sure most entrepreneurs out there will tell you during their first few years in business very challenging with finding boundaries and balance. We often are so excited, motivated and spending all waking hours to fulfill our goals and create our dreams. Covid 19 has allowed me to take a step back and remember what it is I really wanted for myself, my family and my business.
Through this reflection I’ve had to get honest with myself about my food choices and lack of movement. I’ve been so caught up in wanting to help everyone else that it can be easy to forget to do the simple daily steps to help myself.
I’m taking this time to create healthier food choices, moving more and cutting out the late night snacking. (I have a weakness for chips) I’m not dieting, I’m making mindful, intuitive decisions for myself and continuing to try to set a good example for my daughter. Plus I feel and think so much better when I’m nourishing my body and mind with healthy food and movement.
I have also found staring my day off in a positive way and with movement has really helped with my mindset. I wake up before everyone else is awake and run/walk/move for 30 minutes in the morning. I feel refreshed and appreciative that I have given myself this time. No one asking questions or wanting anything. Just a good podcast, my running shoes and a lemon water after my run!
Which leads me to my next point. Please stop putting essential oils in your water. I did it, I was guilty of it and I was wrong. Essential oils are meant to be used aromatically and topically not internally. If you are ingesting oils it should be under the care of a doctor/pharmacist. I’m a member of the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists and ingesting essential oils is a big no no. Yes there is research being done but we don’t know the long term effects it has on our bodies. Also that 1 drop of lemon you are adding to your water is actually really potent and it is the rind of the lemon that is used for the distillation process. That is a whole lot of lemons in one powerful drop! Squeezing lemon juice into your water is way safer and far less potent for your body.
In addition, according the the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists website “Essential oils can be irritating and sensitizing, and some chemical constituents have the potential to cause systemic toxicity if used improperly. Therefore, safe use is critical. CFA members are required to adhere to the CFA code of ethics, which disallows the application of undiluted essential oils or ingestion of oils.
Essential oils used as food flavouring, within various pharmaceuticals and natural health products, such as vitamins are regulated by Health Canada. In these circumstances the CFA suggests individuals use the guidelines provided by the regulatory body. Health Canada does not recommend internal uses of essential oils as a stand-alone product.”
Another thing to be mindful of when applying lemon essential oil to your body is that it is photosensitive and is not to be applied to skin that will be exposed to sunlight within 12 hours. Oil and water don’t mix and that is why a carrier oil is always used when applying essential oils to your body and not water. When applying lemon topically to your body, I find the best spots to apply are my wrists and temples.
